Gideon Lincecum (1793-1874) was a physician, philosopher and naturalist born in
Warren County, Georgia. Lincecum first came to Texas on an exploring expedition in
January 1835. He moved to Long Point, Texas in 1848. Lincecum was a widely published
naturalist and scholar of Choctaw traditions. In 1868, Lincecum moved to Tuxpan,
Mexico, to continue his studies. He returned to Texas in 1873 and died at Long
Point, Texas in 1874.
Correspondence, personal papers, writings and botanical notes and specimens relate to
Gideon Lincecum's naturalistic philosophy; weather; soil; plant and insect life;
terrain and natives of Tuxpan, Mexico; "History of the Chahta Nation"; W. P. Doran
family. The collection also includes a transcript and printed copy of Gideon
Lincecum’s “Personal Reminiscences of an Octogenerian”.
