Papers document the business and personal affairs of Davis, the eldest brother of Jefferson Davis. Includes an 1838 loan co-signed by Joseph and Jefferson, government documents concerning actions taken by the Freedmen's Bureau involving Davis's former slaves and plantations, and a printed petition to President Andrew Johnson requesting a pardon and restoration of Davis's land. Also included are letters from Davis describing his experiences in the early years of Reconstruction.
