Stephen Shadegg was a Phoenix, Arizona, pharmaceutical manufacturer and
political consultant. He served as campaign manager and advisor to Goldwater,
who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1952 and reelected in 1958. Shadegg
was a regional coordinator for Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign against
Lyndon B. Johnson and assisted with his subsequent Senate campaigns. Goldwater
retired from the Senate in January 1987.
Collection consists of political consultant Stephen Shadegg's campaign
files for Goldwater's 1952 and 1958 U.S. Senate campaigns and his 1964
Republican presidential primary effort. He managed Goldwater's campaign in
Oregon and in the general election for Region VII, which included Washington,
Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, Alaska and
Hawaii. Includes correspondence, speeches, press releases, general information
files, newspaper clippings, and literature and memorabilia for each campaign.
Also includes speeches and Goldwater's nationally syndicated column, "How Do
You Stand, Sir?," co-written with Shadegg, and research notes and drafts of
books written by Shadegg as well as his personal correspondence.
Political and personal files from 1952 to 1965 compiled by Stephen
Shadegg and donated by him to the Humanities Research Center, University of
Texas at Austin, in July 1965. Transferred to the Barker Texas History Center
(now the Center for American History) in August 1965.
Stephen Shadegg / Barry Goldwater Collection, 1949-1965, Center for
American History, The University of Texas at Austin.
