Biographical Note

Born in Fort Worth in 1952, Pete Geren earned degrees from the University of Texas at Austin (B.A. 1974 and J.D. 1978) before becoming executive assistant to U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen in 1983. Geren was elected to fill the U.S. House vacancy left by Jim Wright in 1989 and was subsequently reelected three times. In 2001 he joined the Department of Defense as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense and in 2006 was named Under Secretary of the Army.
