Elmer J. Edwards accompanied his father on his business travels from
their home in San Antonio through Texas during the mid-1930s. Most of the
photographs in this collection were taken during those travels.
The 192-page photograph album of Elmer J. Edwards contains approximately
3,460 images from the mid-1930s. These snapshots by Edwards, an amateur
photographer, portray small towns in Texas and contiguous states and street
scenes of San Antonio and Austin, Texas. The photographer focused primarily on
public buildings and other civic structures. Also included are pictures of
parades and speeches, family friends, well-known personalities such as Adina De
Zavala, and aerial views.
These boxes contain loose pages from the original scrapbook. A
transcription of Mr. Edwards' typed labels, with some corrections, is provided
here because the originals that remain legible are deteriorating. Missing page
numbers indicate that no labels exist for those pages.
Elmer J. Edwards Photograph Album, ca. 1935 - ca. 1938, Center for
American History, The University of Texas at Austin.

The various pictures on this page were taken in the
scenic heart of the Frio canyon region of the Lone Star State, which centers
around the little town of Leakey, the county seat of Real County. They show the
various views of the Frio River, the great hanging cliffs along that beautiful
stream, and the mountain and natural loveliness of this spectacular,
undisturbed region. Most of the pictures were taken along the road between
Leakey and Rocksprings; which follows for several miles along the middle of the
Frio headwaters. Other highlights of the region are Alto Frio Encampment and
Garner State Park. |

The Frio Canyon region of Uvalde and Real counties
continues on this page, showing Gerner State Park, on the Uvalde-Leakey
highway, and the beautiful waterfalls and cliffs in the upper reaches of the
Frio River and the Frio headwaters country. The lower views, particularly,
exemplify the mighty disintegration of the mighty limestone cliffs along the
Frio River, as seen within the property of the Prade Ranch, which has become
one of the most popular vacation resorts in the Hill country today. The entire
region is heavily wooded, and represents the very best of the Lone Star state
in the Great Canyon Regions of the Edwards Plateau. |

4. Houston, Texas' largest city. By Elmer J. Edwards
Jr., in August 1939. This aerial view of Houston, taken at a point almost
directly above the Grand Central Station of the Southern Pacific Railroad,
looks in a southeasterly direction towards McGregor Park and Howard Hughes
Municipal Airport. In the foreground is Sam Houston Hall, site of the 1928
Democratic National Convention, and on the left edge may be seen the old Union
Station. Directly in the center is the 40-story Gulf Building, Texas' tallest,
while to the right of it is the new Chamber of Commerce Building, and the two
Esperson Buildings. At the right edge is the Humble Building. Near Texas'
birthplace of freedom at San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, Houston's population
today approaches the half-million mark, and its ship channel industrial area is
the greatest in the southwest. |
