Biographical Note

Burleson (1863-1937) graduated from the University of Texas Law
Department in its first class (1884). As Postmaster General he expanded parcel
post and was responsible for the government takeover of telephone, telegraph,
and cable during World War I and the initiation of air mail in 1918 at the end
of the war.

The Albert Sidney Burleson Papers relate to Burleson's scholastic
achievements, his legal career, his congressional service, and his eight years
as Postmaster General during the Wilson Administration. He was the first Texan
to serve on a president's cabinet and during his tenure the first official air
mail in history was launched.

The papers reflect Burleson's skills as a professional politician, his
personal loyalty to President Wilson that made him an invaluable member of
Wilson's Cabinet, and his displeasure toward those who criticized Wilson after
his death.

An interesting part of the collection is the first diploma issued by
the Law Department of the University of Texas at Austin, a note on White House
stationery, personally typed by Woodrow Wilson, and a letter from President
Wilson congratulating Burleson on his fifty-first birthday and expressing his
"admiration and affection." There is a holograph note from Burleson giving
instructions for his funeral and burial.
