Biographical Note

Janet Lipscomb Alexander taught grade school in Caldwell County, Texas from 1926-1970 and was a genealogist. Born in Lockhart, Texas, in 1905, she was the only child of James O. Lipscomb, a cotton gin owner, and Naomi Clark, a public school teacher and a member of the First Methodist Church in Lockhart. Janet graduated from Lockhart High School in 1923. She studied education at College of Industrial Arts in Denton, Texas, at Southwest Texas State Teachers College, at Texas A&I, and at the University of Texas. She married Carl B. Alexander in 1945. Their marriage produced no children. She wrote biographical entries for W.A. Clark, Jr. and A.M. Alexander in the book "Historical Caldwell County: Where Roots Intertwine"

Scope and Contents

Personal papers document Janet Lipscomb Alexander's childhood and schooling. Her career as an elementary school teacher in Lytton Springs (1926-1928), Luling (1931-1938), and Lockhart (1945-1970) is documented by photographs, certificates, and scrapbooks that also reflect the lives of her students. The family papers contain photographs, genealogies, and 19th century documents of early settlers of Caldwell County, including Zadock Woods, killed in the Dawson massacre (1842), his son Norman Woods, wounded in the same battle and taken to Perote Prison where he died (1843), and Milvern Harrell, who survived both the battle and the internment. Correspondence from Confederate soldiers Alexander Milvern Williams and William Norman Harrell, ancestors of Alexander's mother, Naomi Clark Lipscomb, contain personal narratives of the Civil War. Lipscomb's personal papers contain genealogical information, photographs, and other material on her life as a student and teacher. Correspondence from Elizabeth Miller and Norman Hall provide additional genealogical information on the Woods, Cottle, Harrell, Williams, and Clark families. Several photographs show scenes of Lockhart in the early 20th century.

Organized into three series: 1. Family papers; 2. Naomi Clark Lipscomb Papers; 3. Family Papers. The series are organized by subject and/or material type.
