	 <head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>Patsy Cravens is a native Texan and a photographer. She grew up on her
parents' farm in Colorado County and loves the landscape of South Central
Texas. In the 1980s, she began speaking to residents of Colorado County,
learning about them, and photographing them. Cravens' photographs were included
		in the documentary, "
	 <title linktype="simple"> <emph render="italic">Coming through hard times:
an oral history video</emph> </title>," which she wrote, directed, and
	 produced.</p>
  </bioghist>
  <scopecontent id="a3" encodinganalog="520">
	 <head>Scope and Contents</head>
<p>Most of the 718 photographic prints in the Patsy Cravens Photographic
Archive document the people and landscape of Colorado County, Texas, with
particular focus on the towns of Columbus and Weimar; however, a small portion
of the prints are of Jasper, Texas. Cravens took nearly all, and processed
some, of these photographs; exceptions are a Polaroid, which was given to her,
and photographs of the Cravens' Farm taken in the 1950s. A documentary video, "

	 <title linktype="simple"> <emph render="italic">Coming through hard times :
an oral history video</emph> </title>," which Cravens wrote, directed, and
produced, is included in the Center's holdings. Printed material, comprised of
newspapers and clippings, pertains to the history and happenings in the towns
of Osage and Weimar. Together, the photographs, videotape, and newspapers serve
as a historical and artistic record of the lives, environment, and material
	 culture of Colorado County residents.</p>
<p>The bulk of the collection, gathered in the series "People," depicts
residents of Colorado County in their homes, businesses, farms, yards, and
churches, both inside and out-of-doors. Many individuals were photographed
repeatedly or over time and, often, family and possessions surround them.
Cravens has indicated on the verso of many prints the subject's name, date of
birth and/or death, geographical location, and, occasionally, photo-processing
		information.</p>
<p>Images of landscapes comprise another section of the collection, titled
"Landscapes." In this section, the same geographic area is documented, but the
focus is on architecture and nature rather than individuals. Included are
photos of the Macedonia Baptist Church, St. Paul's Church, Pleasant Hill
Church, the Cravens' farm, and cattle working. Cravens also took a number of
photos of a dog named Chamois and other animals, which are filed with
landscapes because they are outdoor scenes.</p>
<p>Local county fairs form an important aspect of rural life in Texas.
Cravens photographed both performers and attendees at the Colorado County Fair
and at the Weimar Gedenke Day Parade. These images are grouped together in the
		series "Fairs and Parades."</p>
	 <p>Cravens' documentary video, "
	 <title linktype="simple"> <emph render="italic">Coming through hard times :
an oral history video</emph> </title>," provides biographical and anecdotal
information regarding many of the subjects of her photos, as well as historical
background regarding Texas. Residents of Colorado County who tell their stories
in the video include: George Braziel, Romona Cheeks, Alonzo and Beulah Dorn,
Richard and Lillie Freis, Jodie Freyer, Eva Mae Glover, Oscar and Lacey Henry,
Mamie Johnson, Rt. Rev. Gresham Marmion, Cassie McGrew, Pearl Ray Bremby, Ivory
Stewart, Stella Taylor, Lillie Williams, Marie Williams, Ethel Wilson, and
Rosezeanna Woodson. The video incorporates historical photographs and clippings
regarding the "orphan train", slavery in Texas, sharecroppers, cotton farming
and picking, a lynching (1935), and education conditions in Texas. Photographs
of the film crew, filming process, and images used in this video are grouped
together in the series "Coming Through Hard Times."</p>
<p>In 2001, Cravens participated in an exhibition responding to the
racially motivated murder of James Byrd, Jr. Photographs of Jasper, Texas, and
the surrounding area comprised her contribution to the exhibition. These images
included landscapes, churches, loggers and logging equipment, and cemeteries.
Cravens' exhibition photographs, and the corresponding textual labels she
wrote, are gathered in the series "Jasper, Texas." Also included is a short
		video, "Imagining Jasper."</p>
<p>Clippings and newspapers relating to significant events and interesting
historical tidbits make up the "Printed Material" series. Photocopies of the
clippings, which pertain to Weimar, Osage, and Colorado County, are kept with
the rest of the collection, while the original clippings and newspapers are
accessible in the Newspaper Collection and Vertical Files. </p>
