Archer, born in Virginia in 1797, came to Mississippi in 1824, married Ann Barnes (in 1833?), and settled on Anchuca Plantation near Port Gibson, Claiborne County, in 1837 and became a wealthy planter and slave-owner.
Correspondence, financial and legal documents, printed and pictorial material relate to Archer, his relatives, friends, and business associates and contain information on plantation life and economy, agricultural affairs, slaves and slavery in Mississippi and Virginia, and social life and customs in both states. Women's correspondence relates to children, clothing, education, mental and physical health, medical practices, and household affairs. Other material relates to associates in Mississippi, Virginia, and Texas, including Branch Tanner Archer (elder), William Segar Archer, the Anderson, Barnes, Cocke, Eggleston, Hobson, Johnson, and Willis families, Elijah Steele Drake, William P. Grayson, Felix Huston, and L. Masters.
