University of Texas at Arlington, Office of the President Records, Dean E. E. Davis:

A Guide

Descriptive Summary

Creator: University of Texas at Arlington. Office of the President.
Title: University of Texas at Arlington, Office of the President Records, Dean E. E. Davis
Dates: 1925-1946
Abstract: Edward Everett Davis, was a self-made man whose length of service as chief administrator of North Texas Agricultural College was unequalled. During his twenty-one years as Dean, E. E. Davis guided the school through the uncertain years of the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war period. His goal throughout this period was attainment of academic excellence by students and faculty and the development of a junior college curriculum based on "vocational efficiency, cultural fitness and civic competence." The records in Series II show the transformation of North Texas Agricultural College from a small, rural school into one of the outstanding junior colleges in the state.
Identification: AR258, Series II.
Extent: 32 boxes (12.5 linear ft.)
Language: Materials are in English.
Repository: Special Collections, The University of Texas at Arlington Libraries

Historical Note

Edward Everett Davis took on the role of Dean of North Texas Agricultural College in 1925 following the resignation of his predecessor, M. L. Williams. Dean Davis successfully expanded the vocational curricula "to meet the needs for practical education in a practical age" with courses in such areas as aircraft mechanics, electrical trades, welding, commercial art, advertising, merchandising, stenography and laboratory techniques. He also added liberal arts and science courses designed for those students preparing for advanced university degrees. At the same time he was actively engaged in recruiting a talented and competent teaching staff as revealed in his correspondence with J. Frank Dobie, Walter Prescott Webb, and Roy Bedichek at The University of Texas at Austin.

Not all of Dean Davis' ambitions for the college were realized. Early in his administration he asked the legislature for funds to enlarge and modernize several buildings on campus. He asked for and received an appropriation in 1926 for the construction of a dining ball which was never used for that purpose but became the new library. In 1928, the college received $110,000 for the construction of a new science building (Preston Hall) and in 1935 was allotted $100,000 to construct Brazos Hall, a boys' dormitory. Yet after the mid 1930s, the legislature was not receptive to his pleas for funds despite the school's rapidly increasing enrollment and crowded classrooms. World War II finally put an abrupt end to all hopes for construction of additional classroom buildings.

Another aspiration long held by Dean Davis was the transformation of North Texas Agricultural College into a four-year college. In 1937, and again in 1939, attempts were made to persuade the legislature to grant senior status, but the college was not destined to achieve this goal until 1959 (see boxes 6-18, and 12-8, and 13-12).

Dean Davis retired as head of the college in 1946. He died suddenly at his Arlington home in 1950.

Scope and Contents

The papers in Series II show the transformation of North Texas Agricultural College from a small, rural school into one of the outstanding junior colleges in the state.

Many other interesting aspects of the school's history from 1925-1946 are covered in Series II. For example, the collection contains extensive material on the N. Y. A. (National Youth Administration--a forerunner of today's work-study program) and on The National Defense Training Program (second largest in the state) and the Naval Training Unit stationed on campus in the early 1940s. Also of interest are the files of correspondence with T. O. Walton (and later Gibb Gilchrist), President of Texas A&M, and the annual data on course offerings, enrollment, and salaries. Dean Davis' book The White Scourge, an "historical novel dealing with the problem of cotton and tenancy in Texas," and several essays and speeches by the Dean are also included in this series.

Organization

Records in Series II of AR258 consist of 140 folders in 32 boxes arranged chronologically by year and alphabetically therein by document type or subject.
