Abstract: The International Longshoremen's Association, Local 307 was the result of a merger on September 19, 1924 of Locals 310 and 317. The Screwmen's Benevolent Association was a group of specialized longshoremen whose work increased a ship's capacity for cotton bales. On April 1, 1983, in compliance with an order from Federal district Judge Norman W. Black, local 307 merged with three other Galveston Locals, two all-black and one Mexican-American, to form I.L.A. Local 20. The merger capped fourteen years of litigation and legal maneuvering which began in 1969 when the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission had the U.S. Department of Justice file a discrimination suit against the International Longshoremen's Association. Records include minutes, directories, act of incorporation, constitutions, roll books, and newspaper clippings.

Historical Note

The International Longshoremen's Association, Local 307 was the result of a merger on September 19, 1924 of Locals 310 and 317. On April 1, 1983, in compliance with an order from Federal district Judge Norman W. Black, Local 307 merged with three other Galveston Locals, two all-black and one Mexican-American, to form I.L.A. Local 20. Historically, the Screwmen's Benevolent Association was a specialized group of longshoremen skilled in increasing the capacity of a ship's cotton cargo.

Organization

Materials have been arranged by series, one each for Locals 307, 310, and 317. Oversized minute books and cash books have been assigned volume numbers; small volumes and loose material have been arranged in chronological order in folders and placed in boxes at the end of the collection.
