Historical Note

Anna C. Leahy, a forty year teaching veteran of the Fort Worth public schools, was primarily responsible for the first nationwide observance of May as Senior Citizens Month in 1963. She was also a director of Senior Citizens of America in Washington, D.C., from 1957-1967. Miss Leahy's interest in the problems of the elderly was stimulated in the 1930s during the Great Depression when she saw aged men sleeping on the Tarrant County Courthouse steps. She helped them get shelter and jobs. From that time on, Miss Leahy devoted her life to humanitarian pursuits, especially the plight of the aged in America.
