A Guide

Descriptive Summary

Creator: Kahle, Keith, 1909-1997.
Title: Keith Kahle Papers
Dates: 1931-1992
Abstract: Keith H. Kahle was an aviation pioneer, engineer, journalist, and founder of the Oklahoma City Flying School and Central Airlines of Fort Worth, Texas. Central Airlies served over one million passengers in six southwestern states from the 1940s to the 1960s, and was the first commercial airline to fly out of Meacham Field. In 1967, Central airlines merged with Frontier Airlines and Kahle joined LTV Aerospace Corp. of Dallas. He also published his own aviation magazine, Taxi Strip, and wrote columns for the Oklahoma City News and the Daily Oklahoman. Papers consist of correspondence, journals, newpaper clippings, reports, minutes, photographic materials, family history and biographical materials, scrapbook, motion picture film, printed materials, and memorabilia. The Keith H. Kahle Papers reflect the life and career of an aviation pioneer through his personal and business records. The journals, 1956-1992, include notations of Kahle's daily activities as well as contain correspondence, clippings, and memorabilia. They offer insights into the daily life of a business executive in the later half of the twentieth century. Business records include Kahle's early work for Ozark Airlines, records of Keith Kahle Aviation, and Central Airlines. The Central Airlines records document the history of one of the nation's earliest commercial airlines. There are extensive files of Kahle's business activities after leaving Central Airlines until his retirement. They include materials from his employment with the Vought Division of LTV, his corporation, New Ideas, Inc., his attempt to create ABC Airlines, and his involvement in the founding and work with the National Bank of Texas. Biographical materials include resumes and information about Kahle, as well as biographies of several family members and a genealogy of the Kahle family, 1734-1959. Democratic Party politics in Fort Worth and Texas are covered extensively and correspondence and memorabilia relate to Kahle's passion for University of Oklahoma football. Photographs span his childhood, youth, and family and include aviation celebrities; Central Airlines planes and personnel; the XC-142a Tiltwing aircraft produced by Vought/ElectroCom as well as celebrity visits to these corporations; Democratic Party politicians including presidents, governors, and senators; and Oklahoma football players and coaches. Issues of Taxi Strip, the magazine he founded, and Take Off, a newspaper he edited, 1942-1944, are included.

Historical Note

Keith H. As an advocate for the airline industry, Kahle worked with the Civil Aeronautics Board, was a member of the Civil Air Patrol during World War II, and in 1982, was inducted into the Oklahoma Aviation Hall of Fame. He was also an active supporter of the Democratic Party and the University of Oklahoma athletic program.

Scope and Contents

The collection in two-hundred-thirty-one legal-size document boxes, three oversize boxes and one oversize folder, is composed primarily of the papers and artifacts of Keith Hayes Kahle. Included are journals, 1956-92, newspaper clippings, business and personal correspondence, Taxi Strip and Take Off publications, business records, C.A.B. and D.O.T. legal case reports, Central Airlines business records and memorabilia, meeting minutes, aviation literature, city and state literature, project data, investment information, family correspondence, Democratic Party political correspondence and papers, books and photographs, dating from 1902-1992.

The collection is organized in ten series. Series I, Journals, 1956-92, consists of Kahle's personal journals, a group of bound volumes containing typed and holographic notations as well as correspondence, newspaper clippings, and memorabilia. Kahle initiated the journal keeping sporadically in 1956, but by 1961 he was recording his observations daily. The initial journals were in metal-spined, spiral notebooks which were disassembled for preservation reasons. Later journals were bound with plastic and many types of memorabilia were bound into them. His dedication to journal keeping was inspired by C. R. Smith, founder of American Airlines, who suggested to Kahle that this would be a valuable contribution to history, as well as a practical day-to-day means of recording his activities. There is a noticeable gap in the sequence between 1970 and 1974, apparently Kahle did not keep up with the journals during periods of unemployment. The journals are arranged chronologically.

Series II, Biographic Material, is a grouping of material specifically dealing with background information on several members of the Kahle family. Papers from the estate of Betty Alexander Kahle, biographic material on Jean McLaughlin Kahle compiled for her nomination to the Texas Tech University's Board of Regents, memorabilia and artifacts from Charles Edgar Kahle, Jr., a genealogy of the Kahle family between 1734 and 1959, and the resumes and other biographic material on Keith Kahle are included in this series. This material is arranged alphabetically by person.

Series III through VII consist primarily of the records produced as a result of Kahle's various business activities. Series III, Early Life and Early Employment, consists of records from Kahle's school loans and early work for Ozark Airlines in preparation of exhibits for C.A.B. certification. It also contains issues of Taxi Strip, the magazine which Kahle founded, and a complete run of Take Off newspaper from September, 1942 through April, 1944, the period when Kahle was editor. This series is arranged chronologically.

Series IV, Keith Kahle Aviation, consists of the business records of the civilian contract flight school which Kahle operated at Oklahoma City, Oklahoma between 1946 and 1959. Photos and documents used for a government presentation are included with this series since they give the researcher a good understanding of the purpose of the flight school. The letterhead used by Keith Kahle Aviation is particularly nice and several examples are included in this series. Photographic material is first followed by the business records in chronological order.

Series V, Central Airlines, contains a large quantity of the business records of this local service carrier. Some of the earliest records from the corporation are included, but not much from the middle years. Records from 1960 to 1964 are the most inclusive. Most notable from the early period of Central's existence, 1946 to 1953, is a large quantity of correspondence between Kahle and James Batchelor, an aviation attorney who helped to get Central certificated, and then assisted with early corporate matters. Other significant portions of this series include a large number of C.A.B. Docket materials, artifacts promoting Central Airlines, and extensive correspondence with F. Kirk Johnson, one of Central Airline's earliest financial backers. This series also includes annual reports from Central Airlines, business and personal correspondence, meeting minutes, legal documents, financial statements, aviation literature, memos, stockholder lists and information, as well as an oversize scrapbook which contains a vast number of newspaper clippings covering the expansion of the airline from a tiny feeder with single engine planes to a major local carrier. The scrapbook is restricted due to its poor condition as many of the clippings have come un-glued. Most of the photographs have been removed from the scrapbook for preservation reasons and are housed in the photographic series. They have been numbered "S-1, S-2" etc. so that the researcher can locate their former position in the scrapbook.

Series VI, Kahle "Home Files," contains the most extensive record of Kahle's business activities from the time he left Central Airlines until his retirement. The first period of Kahle's employment with Vought division of LTV, from 1965 to 1969, was as an employee, but the later period after 1974 was as a part time subcontractor. All of Kahle's subcontracting and a number of other projects fell under his corporation New Ideas Inc. The records of A B C Airlines, a "paper airline" which Kahle and others attempted to start, are a large portion of this series. Most are housed under the A B C Airlines section, but extensive research into city and state demographics, as well as various aviation related topics are included here. The records of Kahle's activity in founding and working with the National Bank of Texas at Fort Worth are located in this series. These records are arranged alphabetically, with similar types of material prefaced topically such as Cities, Air Carriers, A B C Airlines, etc. in order to keep this material together.

Series VII, Vought/ElectroCom contains the business records, correspondence, technical reports and project information from the various projects which Kahle worked on between 1967 and 1992. Duplicates of the technical reports were deaccessioned.

Series VIII and IX are topical series, the former being political papers and the latter Oklahoma football activity. Kahle was extensively involved with both for many years, particularly after he moved to Fort Worth in the late 1940's. The political papers are largely correspondence and fund raising efforts, and include the records of the Kahle's annual parties for Congressman Jim Wright. Kahle was a delegate to the 1960 and 1964 Democratic Party conventions. The mailing/guest lists from this activity have been deaccessioned. Oklahoma football can be described as Kahle's most consuming passion after aviation. Though unable to attend Oklahoma University he was a lifelong, avid fan and he saved large quantities of newspaper clippings, printed material, programs and other published material, much of which have been deaccessioned since they are readily available in other archives and libraries. What remains is correspondence and memorabilia related to Kahle's interaction with the team, particularly his annual trips to Love Field in Dallas to meet them as they flew in for the Texas-OU game.

Series X, the final series, houses most of the photographic material from this collection. In general it is arranged to correspond as closely as possible to the previous nine series in this collection and is decided into sub-series. The sub-series are Early life, early employment and family; Aviation; Central Airlines; Vought/ElectroCom; Politicians and celebrities; Oklahoma football; and movie film. Early life, early employment and family contains old scrapbook photos from Kahle's childhood and youth. Particularly rare photos of the 1939 National Women's Air Races are in this sub-series. Aviation includes photographs of many aviation celebrities such as Wiley Post and many autographed photos of airline presidents such as Lewis Dymond, Thomas "Tommy" Grace, Frank Hulse, Edward V. Rickenbacher, Robert F. Six, Earl Slick, and C. R. Smith. It also contains photographs of many C.A.A. and C.A.B. figures including Alan Boyd, Don Nyrop, Alfred E. Kahn, and Lee West. The photographic record of Central Airlines is also noteworthy. Many of Central's planes are documented, Central's personnel including F. Kirk Johnson, Jimmy Stewart, and Carl Pohlad. The visit of C.A.B. member Chan Gurney is extensively covered. Vought/ElectroCom photos include a large number of photographs of the XC-142a Tiltwing aircraft, as well as celebrity visits to these corporations. The Politicians and celebrities sub-series consists largely at Kahle's brag-wall photos which have been removed from their frames. Many famous people autographed their portraits to Kahle, particularly members of congress. Finally, the Oklahoma football series consists largely of player and coach portraits. The series as a whole contains photographs, negatives, slides and 8mm film, both black and white, and color. The film has not been viewed and is housed as it was received since no projector was available with which to view it. Duplicate photos were deaccessioned. Most of the photographs are identified in the container list on an item by item level in order to assist the researcher.

The Keith Kahle papers reflect the life and career of an aviation pioneer. The journals, in particular, offer valuable insights into a wide variety of topics such as the life of a business executive during the 1960's through the 1990's. In addition, these papers document the history of one of America's earliest local service airlines. They provide insights into the interaction between various governmental bodies and agencies such as the C.A.B. and the airline industry. Democratic party politics both in Fort Worth and the state of Texas are covered extensively in both the series and the journals. Kahle frequently interacted with media celebrities such as Jimmy Stewart, governmental figures such as Jim Wright, Mike Monroney, and Lyndon Baines Johnson, and aviation figures such as Tom Braniff, C.R. Smith and others. The extent of both the journals and the other papers will provide researchers with a wide variety of topics.

Processing Information

There was virtually no order to this collection when the material were received, but groups of similar files led to the series designated above. Articles which were fragile were copied onto acid free paper, but due to the size of this collection it was not possible to copy all of the newsprint items. In general, folder titles were kept as close to the original as possible. Where folders fell together as a topical category a preface word was added, Kahle did this at times and not at others, these categories have been added where necessary for consistency. Kahle did not separate incoming and outgoing correspondence and this pattern has been maintained.
