Historical Note

The Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union first formed as the International Association of Oil Field, Gas Well, and Refinery Workers of American in El Paso, Texas in 1918. The union was initially affiliated with the American Federation of Labor (AFL). In 1937, the organization became the Oil Workers International Union (OWIU) and became affiliated instead with the Committee for Industrial Organzation (CIO). In 1955, the OWIU merged with the United Gas, Coke, and Chemical Workers of America to become the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union (OCAW). In 1999, the OCAW finally merged with the United Paperworkers International Union (UPIU) to form the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE).


Scope and Contents

Records contain District Council 4 minutes, financial reports, and constitution and by-laws, 1954-1999. Also included are minutes, an index, and financial reports for District Council 3, 1954-1959.

Records consist of 33 folders of minutes arranged in chronological order. District Council 3 minutes are in the first folder, and the remainding 32 folders contain District Council 4 minutes.
