Abstract: Edmund Pendleton Gaines was a U.S. Army officer who fought in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War, sent troops to Texas in 1836 to protect settlers from raids, and held the rank of major general in command of the Western Department of the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the Mexican War. Papers contain a letter, a memorial, an engraving, an autograph, and U. S. congressional documents. The letter and memorial were written by Gaines to the governor and legislature of Louisiana regarding a proposal for the defense of U. S. seaports and the construction of a national railroad network. Documents deal with Indian affairs, military defense, and the call for volunteers for service in 1846. The memorial was printed with the title: A Plan for the Defense of the Western Frontier, House document no. 311, 25th Congress, 2nd session, 1838.

Biographical Note

Edmund Pendleton Gaines attained the rank of Major General in the United States Army. He fought in the War of 1812 and the Black Hawk War, sent troops to Texas in 1836 to protect settlers from raids, and commanded the Western Department of the U.S. Army at the outbreak of the Mexican War.
