Abstract: The Texas AFL-CIO, a federation of local unions and central labor councils in Texas, is a central body that represents labor interests and acts as the policy-making, educational, and legislative arm of AFL-CIO labor at the state level. This collection contains letters, biographies, histories, photographs, lists, and printed materials. Materials are related to labor history, projects, and issues and contains biographical information on individuals, histories of specific unions, and labor related memorabilia collected and preserved by Ruth Ellinger, Director of Education and Research, Texas AFL-CIO. Information about the following unions is included: Amalgamated Clothing Workers, International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union, Pecan Shellers, Southern Tenant Farmers Union, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, and International Union of Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers. Biographies and subjects include: Ruth Allen, Samuel Gompers, Paul Montemayor, Nicholas A. The Texas AFL-CIO was formed on July 29, 1957 when the Texas State Federation of Labor and the Texas State CIO Council merged. The organization, a federation of local unions and central labor councils in Texas, is a central body that represents labor interests and acts as the policy-making, educational, and legislative arm of AFL-CIO labor at the state level.
