Historical Note

Founded in 1938, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) is a national labor union that was originally comprised mainly of workers in the telephone industry. In December 1950, Local 6215 was formed in Dallas, Texas.

Scope and Contents

The Communication Workers of America Local 6215 collection consists of records from the Dallas local dating from 1950 to 1986. The records, contained in eight boxes, reflect the history of the union local from its creation in 1950 to 1974, with a few items from the early 1980s. The records include the minutes from both the Executive Board from 1950 to 1974 and the regular local meetings of the members en mass from 1950 to 1974 as well as notices to the membership for some of those years and a few years of convention credentials. Also included are arbitration cases of workers with grievances against primarily Southwestern Bell from 1957 to 1964 and 1971 to 1973; records from the CWA strikes of 1953 and 1971; supervisor appraisals; dues authorization from 1969; interlocal transfers from 1952 to 1965; political notices from 1957 to 1964; records from the divisive Teamsters raid on the CWA for members in 1962; books on labor agreements in 1983 and 1986; the Union bible; photographs from the 1971 CWA strike; and many undated photographs. The bulk of the collection consists of minutes of the executive board and the local membership meetings.

Separated Material

This collection contained material that for one of three reasons was deaccessioned. The first was the matter of duplicates or in some cases triplicates. These came primarily from the minutes and the notices to the membership. The better copy or the copy with annotations was kept and the duplicates were deaccessioned. The second area came from the members' letters of resignation from the union. There were over one hundred of them and most of them were mere scraps of paper telling the union to stop deducting union dues from their paychecks. These were deaccessioned. The ones that were kept gave their reasons for withdrawing from the union and were more interesting and revealing about the union. The third area where material was deaccessioned was the photographs. A few photographs were deaccessioned because they were duplicates. Most of the photographs that were deaccessioned were unidentified. They were pictures of social events such as picnics or dances and had no identifying marks.
