The Dallas AFL-CIO Council was organized in 1956. The major labor groups involved in forming the organization were the Dallas Area American Federation of Labor, which was established in 1891; the Dallas Central Labor Council, which was established in 1910; and the Dallas Area Industrial Union Council, which was established in 1942. The organization serves as a central organizing body for labor unions in the Dallas area.

Scope and Contents

Records contain the minutes of the Regular ar Council meetings and the Executive Board meetings of the Dallas AFL-CIO Council from May 1956 through December 1979. Included in those minutes are the financial statements and budgets for the same period. The records also consist of correspondence and memoranda between the Dallas AFL-CIO Council and the national headquarters in Washington, D.C., the state headquarters in Austin, local affiliates, members, politicians, and government officials. Included are press releases and speeches by George Meany and Lane Kirkland, national secretary-treasurers of the AFL-CIO, and Gene Freeland and William Chapman, secretary-treasurers of the Dallas AFL-CIO Council. Other materials include transcripts of legal cases and congressional hearing testimony, reports, statements of agreement, organizational charts, department descriptions, committee descriptions, and member lists. There are printed materials such as newsletters, newspaper clippings, fliers, and pamphlets. Photographs include Council members attending the Dallas Steward Training School and Labor Day activities at a Texas Rangers baseball game.

Records from the Dallas United Way are included as, historically, the Secretary-Treasurer of the Dallas AFL-CIO Council also served on the Dallas United Way's Board of Directors and were maintained as part of the Dallas AFL-CIO Council records.
