Abstract: Lloyd "Cissy" Stewart Lale was a reporter, editor, photographer, and columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram from 1949 until her retirement in 1987. She began her career with the Marshall News Messenger in 1945 and served as editor of the Cleburne Times Review, 1947-1949, before joining the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Lale received many honors for her writing and for her contributions to the preservation of Fort Worth's heritage. Papers contain correspondence, invitations, awards, photographic materials, articles, research files, newspaper clippings, a videotape, programs, magazines, and society pages that reflect the personal and professional life of Cissy Lale. The papers include literature on various people, events, and institutions in the Fort Worth area.

Historical Note

Cissy Stewart Lale was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 15, 1924. In 1930, she and her family moved to Cleburne, where she attended public schools. While in high school, she worked on the school's newspaper. In 1941, Cissy graduated from high school and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she was a staff reporter for The Daily Texan for three years. In 1945, she received her Bachelor of Journalism degree. She began her professional career as a reporter for the Marshall News Messenger and worked for the East Texas paper from 1945 until 1947. Stewart then moved back to Cleburne, where she served as editor of the daily Cleburne Times Review for two years. In March of 1949, Stewart joined the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. At the Star-Telegram, she served in various positions, including reporter, editor of the evening women's section succeeding the late Mary Sears, art editor, fashion editor, photographer, and columnist.

Cissy, as she is known by her readers, is an active member of the Fort Worth Professional Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., formerly Theta Sigma Phi. She served as Fort Worth Chapter president from 1962-1964 and as national president from 1968-1971.

In October, 1983, Stewart married longtime friend, Max S. Lale, a retired newspaper publisher, public relations director, and historian from Marshall, Texas. They honeymooned across Europe for a month

After 38 years at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Mrs. Lale retired on July 1, 1987. Gib Lewis, Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, honored her with House Resolution 97, celebrating her work as a columnist at the Star-Telegram. She has also been honored for her contributions to the preservation of Fort Worth's rich heritage.


Scope and Contents

Papers contain correspondence, invitations, awards, photographic materials, articles, research files, newspaper clippings, a videotape, programs, magazines, and society pages that reflect the personal and professional life of Cissy Lale. The papers include literature on various people, events, and institutions in the Fort Worth area. The society pages are from the early 1900s in Fort Worth. Personal and professional correspondence and copies of articles by Lale date from 1971-1989. Photographs are of the Assembly Ball, Jewel Charity Ball, Fort Worth Military Ball, a Fort Worth Club costume ball, debutante parties, fashion shows, the Steeplechase, foreign diplomats and royalty, and several photographs of Fort Worth personalities, including Lale and her husband, Max Lale.
