Historical Note

The Association of Mexican-American Students (AMAS) was organized in 1970 by students at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA). The purpose of AMAS is to unite Mexican-Americans socially and to establish relations between Mexican-Americans at UTA and in communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The group was also active in the Raza Unida Party. The Raza Unida Party was a political party active in the 1970's that was first organized in south Texas to represent Chicanos in the political process. It soon spread to other parts of Texas and the southwestern U.S. and broadened its base to include other disenfranchised minorities. In 1972 and 1974, Ramsey Muniz unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Texas on the Raza Unida Party platform.
