Abstract: Chartered in 1949, the Dallas Moving Picture Machine Operators Union, Local 249-A was an all-black labor union of motion picture operators in Dallas, Texas. In 1969, Local 249-A merged with Local 249, a previously all white labor union. Records consist of minutes, photographs, legal documents, newspaper clipping, and a booklet.

Historical Note

The Dallas Moving Picture Machine Operators Union, Local 249-A was a local affiliate of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Operators of the United States and Canada. Local 249-A was chartered on November 1, 1949 and was comprised of African American motion picture operators in Dallas, Texas. On February 11, 1969, Local 249-A merged with Local 249, which had previously been an all-white local.


Scope and Contents

Records consist of minutes, photographs, legal documents, newspaper clipping, and a booklet. Minutes record and describe the proceedings of meetings held by Local 249-A from 1950-1957. Topics include individual members, training of new operators, contracts with individual theaters, financial matters, and working conditions. Minutes also include roll calls with lists of member names. Several group photographs of Local 249-A members are present. Legal documents include a contract dated 1949 between Park Theatre and Local 249-A. A ruling and newspaper clipping concerning a court case brought against the newly merged Local 249 by member Samuel R. Tankersley alleging discrimination is also included. The booklet briefly describes the creation, purpose, and status of Local 249-A and its members at the time of its printing some time prior to February 1, 1951.
