Abstract: William A. Ransom (1891-1954) was professor of English at Arlington State College and its predecessors from 1919 to 1954. He served in many capacities during his long career in Arlington and was the first Shorthorn adviser, the first basketball coach, and the first tennis coach at the school when it was known as Grubbs Vocational College. This collection is comprised mostly of grade books for years 1919-1928 and 1947-1952, for English courses taught by W.A. Ransom. Also included are grade books of J. T. Summerhill, Enid Eastland, and Irma Barnes and some grades for history and math courses. A small number of letters, notes, exam questions, and instructions found scattered throughout the grade books are present within the collection.

Biographical Note

William A. Ransom (1891-1954) began teaching at Grubbs Vocational College, a forerunner of the University of Texas at Arlington, in 1919. He served as a Professor of English until his death in 1954, at which time the college was known as Arlington State College. Ransom also served as head of the English Department and was the first Shorthorn adviser, the first basketball coach, and the first tennis coach. In addition he directed plays, coached the debate team, and was the school's director of public information for nine years. Ransom Hall, located on the campus of the University of Texas at Arlington, is named after him.


Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised mostly of grade books 1919-1928 and 1947-1952, for English courses taught by W.A. Ransom. Also included are grade books of J. T. Summerhill, Enid Eastland, and Irma Barnes and some grades for history and math courses. A small number of letters, notes, exam questions, and instructions found scattered throughout the grade books are present within the collection.

Grade books are arranged in chronological order. Miscellaneous materials found scattered throughout the grade books were unfolded and placed at the end of the collection.
