Abstract: The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) was established at the University of Texas at Arlington, then known as Grubbs Vocational College, in the fall of 1921. This collection is comprised of fourteen scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, newsletters, letters, programs, service pins, and ribbons that document the history of the ROTC program at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1948-1973. Topics include training exercises, social events, clubs and organizations, ceremonies and awards, ROTC Corps Sweethearts, company updates, cadets, alumni, and the Sam Houston Rifles. Also included is a research paper on the history of the Sam Houston Rifles, a precision drill team nicknamed the Jodies.

Historical Note

The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) was established at the University of Texas at Arlington, then known as Grubbs Vocational College, in the fall of 1921. The ROTC program, which serves to train and prepare students for officer commissions in the United States Armed Forces following graduation, was mandatory for all male students of the college until 1954. Members of the ROTC program comprised the Corps of Cadets at the North Texas Agricultural College when it was affiliated with the Texas A&M System.


Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of fourteen scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs, newsletters, letters, programs, service pins, and ribbons that document the history of the ROTC program at the University of Texas at Arlington from 1948-1973. Topics include training exercises, social events, clubs and organizations, ceremonies and awards, ROTC Corps Sweethearts, company updates, cadets, alumni, and the Sam Houston Rifles.

Also included is a research paper on the history of the Sam Houston Rifles, a precision drill team nicknamed the Jodies.
