Abstract: Sherman Fricks was the secretary-treasurer of the Texas AFL-CIO from 1973 to 1979. This collection contains correspondence, activity and itinerary reports, newspaper clippings, reports, and a tape recording. The correspondence of Sherman Fricks and other labor officials comprises the bulk of the material and documents the activities of the Texas AFL-CIO. Also includes one file of Henry Munoz, Jr., Business Manager of the San Antonio Area Public Employees Local 2399, which contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, and a tape recording and transcript of the 1978 Labor Day Message by George Meany, President, AFL-CIO. Munoz also served as part of the Texas AFL-CIO.

Biographical Note

Sherman Fricks was born in Oklahoma in 1925 to Homer and Virgie Fricks. By 1930, his family had settled in the vicinity of Houston, Texas where his father worked as a pipefitter for an oil refinery. Fricks followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a pipefitter and later, the business manager for Houston Pipefitters Local 211, a position he left when he was became secretary-treasurer for the Texas AFL-CIO in 1973. Sherman Fricks served as the secretary-treasurer of the Texas AFL-CIO from 1973 to 1978. He also served on two state boards as a political appointee of Govenor Dolph Briscoe. In 1979, Fricks returned to the Houston area, having again been elected to serve as business manager of the Pipefitter's Local Union 211. Local 211, originally chartered in 1949, is affiliated with the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters and with the Southwest Pipe Trades Association.

This collection contains correspondence, activity and itinerary reports, newspaper clippings, reports, and a tape recording. The correspondence of Sherman Fricks and other labor officials comprises the bulk of the material and documents the activities of the Texas AFL-CIO.
