Abstract: Founded in 1938, the Communications Workers of America (CWA) is a labor union that was originally comprised mainly of workers in the telephone industry and known as the National Federation of Telephone Workers until 1947. Eddie Webb was considered a pioneer union builder in Texas and had a major role in forming the early CWA and later became North Texas director of the CWA. This collection contains 22 black and white photographs of groups taken at various CWA events in Texas cities.

Historical Note

In 1929, Eddie Webb went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Temple, Texas. He participated in the founding meetings that led to the formation of the National Federation of Telephone Workers in 1938. By 1945, he had moved to Dallas as a member of the union's staff. and where he later served as the North Texas director of the the Communications Workers of America, retiring in 1968. The National Federation of Telephone Workers remained such through 1947, and thereafter became the Communications Workers of America (CWA), a national labor union representing workers in communications industries including telecommunications, cable, print and publishing, manufacturing, public workers, health care, law enforcement, and numerous other fields.

Scope and Contents

Twenty-two black and white group photographs taken at various National Federation of Telephone Workers of America and Communications Workers of America in Texas cities collected by T.E. (Eddie) Webb, North Texas director of the CWA until his retirement in 1968. Events depicted in the photographs include conventions, meetings, conferences, and schools.
