Historical Note

John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963. His brother, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated five years later while campaigning for the United States presidency in Los Angeles, California. Entire newspaper editions were dedicated to covering the events surrounding the assassinations and the investigations that followed.


Scope and Contents

The collection includes newspapers from Dallas, Austin, New York, and Washington, D.C., dated November 22-December 14, 1963, as well as national periodicals on the subject of the John F. Kennedy assassination from 1963-1967 and 1988. Also included are Fort Worth Star-Telegram newspapers pertaining to the assassination of Robert F. Kennedy from June 5-9, 1968.

Acquisition

Several newspapers and magazines that were originally part of the Amalgamated Meatcutters and Butcher Workmen of North America Records and the Carl Brannin Papers were transferred into this collection. In 1990 and 1995, Jenkins Garrett donated newspapers and magazines related to the John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy assassinations that were also placed into the collection. Since then, additional newspapers and magazines pertaining to the subject have been donated by various individuals or transferred from collections.
