Abstract: Hazel Rounds Mason broke gender barriers in the male dominated oil business by becoming an executive at the Pure Oil Company. Mason began working for the company as a stenographer in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1918 and advanced in the ranks until she became an executive in the production department of the firm. She retired from the company in 1960 after 42 years of service. This collection contains photocopies of scrapbook pages that trace Hazel Rounds Mason's career at the Pure Oil Company. The photocopied pages include newspaper clippings, newsletters, and photographs.

Biographical Note

Hazel Soper Rounds Mason broke gender barriers in the male-dominated oil business by becoming an executive at the Pure Oil Company. She was born in Oklahoma to Edward and Elizabeth Soper in 1897 where she graduated from Enid Business College and began working for the Pure Oil Company as a stenographer in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1918. She married Benjamin F. Rounds, Jr., also an employee of Pure Oil, and they transferred to the Fort Worth office in 1931 where she remained until she retired in 1960. She became a widow in 1938 when her husband died in a car crash. By 1940, she was chief clerk in the accounting department and later remarried. She continued advancing up the ranks until she became an executive in the production department. She died in Oklahoma in 1975.


Scope and Contents

This collection contains photocopies of scrapbook pages that trace Hazel Rounds Mason's career at the Pure Oil Company. The photocopied pages include newspaper clippings, newsletters, and photographs. The scrapbook, designed by Naomi Ray Morey, is titled "Fort Worth Desk and Derrick Club's Tribute to a Pioneer in the Industry."
