Historical Note

In 1883, a group of cowboys in the Texas Panhandle participated in a strike protesting against the changing nature of cattle ranching and demanding better wages. The effort lasted two and a half months and was ultimately unsuccessful.


Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of photocopies of two articles: a chapter entitled "The Cowboy Strike" from John L. McCarty's, The History of Tascosa, Texas, Thesis (M.A.) West Texas State University, 1943; and an article entitled "The Cowboy Strike of 1883: its causes and meaning" by Robert E. Zeigler in the West Texas Historical Association Year Book, 1971.
