Biographical Note

George Clifton Edwards (1878-1961) was a Dallas lawyer, educator, and humanitarian. A supporter of liberal causes throughout his life, Edwards defended civil rights, the rights of the poor, and the right of workers to organize. He also founded and edited The Laborer, the first official organ of the Texas State Federation of Labor, and ran for Texas governor on the Socialist Party ticket in 1906.


Scope and Contents

This collection contains an autobiography, speeches, articles, certificate, clippings, and printed material. Most of the materials are photocopies and are by or about Edwards. Biographical information includes an autobiography, a book written about Edwards by his son, obituaries, and articles written about Edwards. Articles and speeches written by Edwards pertain to the legal profession and civil rights. One such article describes Edwards' firsthand account of a public lynching by an angry mob in Dallas.
