Abstract: Kenneth L. Whitt (1935-) was the Director of Public Information and Publications at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) from 1963 to 1972. During this time, he also wrote a thesis on the history of the UTA student newspaper, the Shorthorn, in fulfillment of the Master of Science degree at East Texas State University. As part of the research for his thesis, Whitt corresponded with many former students, faculty advisors, and editors that had worked on the Shorthorn since its inception in 1919. This collection contains the research materials gathered by Whitt for his thesis. Materials include correspondence, photographs, questionnaires, biographies, notes, Shorthorn reproductions, copies of the Aggie Dormocrat and the Grubonian, Shorthorn staff reunion guestbook, and tape recordings that document UTA campus life and working on the Shorthorn through the years.

Biographical Note

Kenneth L. Whitt (1935-) was the Director of Public Information and Publications at The University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) from 1963 to 1972. During this time, he also wrote a thesis on the history of the UTA student newspaper, the Shorthorn, in fulfillment of the Master of Science degree at East Texas State University. As part of the research for his thesis, Whitt corresponded with many former students, faculty advisors, and editors that had worked on the Shorthorn since its inception in 1919.


Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, photographs, questionnaires, biographies, notes, Shorthorn reproductions, copies of the Aggie Dormocrat and the Grubonian, Shorthorn staff reunion guestbook, and tape recordings. The collection is comprised of materials gathered in researching Whitt's thesis, The Shorthorn, 1919-1969: A History of a Student Newspaper. Interesting observations on campus life and working on the Shorthorn through the years can be found in the letters and questionnaires from former Shorthorn editors and faculty advisors. Biographies are also included of Arlington College founders Lee Morgan Hammond, Edward Emmett Rankin, and William M. Trimble.
