The strike was a particularly violent one as it was marred by beatings, ambushes, a murder, exchanges of gunfire, and a bomb explosion. Collection consists mainly of clippings pertaining to the strike and the violence that marred it.

Historical Note

Members of United Steelworkers of America, Local 4134 participated in a violent strike against the Lone Star Steel Company in Lone Star, Texas in 1968-1969. The strike was a particularly violent one as it was marred by beatings, ambushes, a murder, exchanges of gunfire, and a bomb explosion. Hundreds of non-union workers hired to fill the spots of striking workers slept in makeshift tent cities inside the perimeter of the plant rather than venture off the premises. The strike ended in May of 1969 after nearly seven months when Local 4134 and the Lone Star Steel Company agreed to contract terms.


Scope and Contents

Collection consists mainly of clippings pertaining to the United Steelworkers of America strike against Lone Star Steel Company and the violence that marred it. Also included is a Texas AFL-CIO News newsletter (March 1969), a flyer, and some notes.
