Biographical Note

Lois McGoodwin Ham was a political activist from Arlington, Texas and a member of the 1976 Democratic National Platform Committee. The committee was comprised of representatives from across the country and served to help shape and draft the 1976 Democratic national platform. Members voted on platform proposals after studying issues and hearing testimonies from witnesses. Jimmy Carter won the 1976 Democratic nomination and would go on to win the presidential election later that year. Her husband, Garland Ham (1930-2015), employed at the General Motors assembly plant in Arlington when it first opened, was organizer and first president of United Auto Workers Local 276.

Scope and Contents

Papers contain correspondence, statements and testimonies, a member's kit, and booklets. All materials pertain to organizational announcements and rules for the Democratic National Platform Committee and platform proposals under consideration in 1976. Information pertaining to platform proposals concerning labor, abortion, insurance, marijuana, mortgages, and gay rights is included and documented through correspondence, testimonies, statements, reports, and booklets.
