Abstract: Established in 1922, the Austin Labor Temple Association (ALTA) membership was composed of local labor unions and individuals that owned and operated the Austin Labor Temple. Located at 10th and Brazos streets, the building was in use from 1923 until it was razed in 1959. Records pertain mainly to the sale of the building and include correspondence, minutes, legal documents, financial documents, credentials, certificates, membership lists, and resolutions. A 1923 Labor Day souvenir program for the Austin Trades Council is also included.

Historical Note

The Austin Labor Temple Association was established on December 21, 1922. The association was composed of individuals and representatives of local unions united for the purpose of erecting and operating a building to be used as a meeting place for its members. The building, known as the Austin Labor Temple, was located at 10th and Brazos streets and was in use from 1923 until 1959, when the structure was sold and razed.


Scope and Contents

Records are comprised of correspondence, minutes, legal documents, financial documents, credentials, certificates, membership lists, and resolutions. Correspondence, minutes, legal documents, financial documents, certificates, and resolutions pertain mainly to the activities of the Austin Labor Temple Association in conjunction with the sale of the Austin Labor Temple. Credentials concern the persons chosen to serve as representatives for various local labor unions at Austin Labor Temple Association meetings. Also included is a 1923 Labor Day souvenir program for the Austin Trades Council that was found in the cornerstone of the Austin Labor Temple building when it was razed in 1959.


Organization

Original order was maintained for the most part. Seven original headings were kept and a miscellaneous heading was created during processing. Materials are contained in 8 folders which are arranged by subject and within each folder are in either chronological or alphabetical order.
