Historical Note

Founded in 1900, the Austin Trades Council served as a central organizing body for labor unions. Its purpose was to organize, coordinate, and unify unions and union activity in Austin, Texas. Delegates from each participating labor union attended meetings to discuss and consider labor issues and the activities of labor unions in the city.


Scope and Contents

The Austin Trades Council Records are comprised of two bound volumes of minutes and a microfilm reel containing minutes and scrapbook pages. The minutes record and describe the proceedings of meetings held by the Austin Trades Council from 1904-1910 and from 1963-1967. Topics include the various labor unions associated with the Trades Council, representatives and delegates, grievances, financial matters, political matters, and organized activities. The scrapbook pages contain mainly newspaper clippings about the Austin Trades Council and its activities.
