Records contain correspondence, financial records, minutes, membership lists, clippings, and printed materials.

Historical Note

Chartered in 1947, the Tarrant County Industrial Union Council-CIO was a central organizing body of Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) unions in Tarrant County. The body served to organize, coordinate, and unify Tarrant County CIO unions including the UPWA (United Packinghouse Workers of America), CWA (Communication Workers of America), LIU (Local Industrial Union), OCAW (Oil, Chemical, and Atomic Workers Union), TWU (Transport Workers Union), UPA (United Paperworkers of America), UAW (United Auto Workers), and USA (United Steelworkers of America). On August 15, 1957, it merged with the Fort Worth Trades Assembly of the AFL (American Federation of Labor) to form the Tarrant County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO.


Scope and Contents

The Tarrant County Industrial Union Council Records are comprised of correspondence, financial records, minutes, membership lists, newspaper clippings, ledgers, and printed material. The correspondence pertains to a wide range of topics involved in the daily operations of the Tarrant County Industrial Union Council including national and local labor unions and issues; taxes and dues paid or owed; political campaigns and movements; requests for information; and the Community Service School. Some of the correspondence contains enclosures such as brochures, flyers, and reports. Financial records include ledgers, bank books, statements, receipts, reports, and check stubs pertaining to the general fund and the educational fund. Minutes detail the events of council meetings including recommendations and motions concerning labor matters; financial matters; and the elections of officers. Membership lists record local unions affiliated with the Tarrant County Central Labor Council-CIO as well as the officers and members of those unions, and members of the Tarrant County Democratic Woman's Club. Clippings pertain to local and national elections and political matters; labor unions; investigations into communist activities; and racial integration. Records also include material on the 1954 Ralph Yarborough campaign and various Tarrant County elections.
