Abstract: United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 14 of San Antonio, Texas was created in 1910 following several mergers. In 1896, Locals 367 and 717 merged and retained 717 as their number. Then, in September 1910, Local 717 and Local 1233 merged and became Local 14. Records are comprised of 27 bound volumes of minutes from 1890-1948 of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Locals 367, 717, and 14. Other materials such as resolutions, correspondence, financial statements, and reports are scattered throughout the pages of the minute books.

Historical Note

The United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBC) is a labor union of carpenters, cabinetmakers, millwrights, framers, floor layers, roofers, drywallers, and workers in forest-products and related industries. Local 14 was a local affiliate of the UBC in San Antonio, Texas and was the result of several mergers. In 1896, Locals 367 and 717 merged and retained 717 as their number. Then, in September 1910, Local 717 merged with Local 1233 to form Local 14.


Scope and Contents

Records consist of 27 bound volumes of minutes of Locals 367, 717, and 14. These volumes record and describe the proceedings of meetings held by the Locals between 1890 and 1948. Topics recorded in the minutes include motions, communications with other unions and national headquarters, union membership, committees, elections, matters pertaining to individual members, grievances, working conditions, financial matters, labor agreements and issues, and other general labor union business. Scattered throughout the minute books are also copies of resolutions, financial statements, memos, reports, membership lists, and correspondence from other locals and national headquarters.
