Historical Note

Galveston, Texas was an early center of union activity in Texas with unions documented as early as 1857. The Galveston Labor Council was a central body that was created to organize, coordinate, and unify the activities of local unions in Galveston County, Texas. Delegates from affiliated labor unions represented their organizations by attending and participating in Labor Council meetings, elections, and votes.


Scope and Contents

Records include minutes that describe the proceedings of meetings held by the Galveston Labor Council from 1900-1920 and 1949-1967. The first entry of minutes occurs one week after the Galveston hurricane of 1900 and records the resolutions adopted and actions undertaken by the Labor Council in response to the destructive storm. The minutes also include membership lists, financial records, resolutions, elections and votes, and descriptions of issues pertaining to specific labor unions and businesses. Printed materials include a souvenir book of the history of the Galveston Labor Temple (1940) and Labor Day programs (1941-1959). Other materials include correspondence, an AFL-CIO Merger Proposal, and a constitution and by-laws.

Materials are arranged according to document type and then chronologically. Three oversized boxes contain 8 bound volumes and the remaining records are in 25 folders contained in two manuscript boxes.
