Historical Note

The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) represented workers in the women and children's apparel industries. Local 214 was the local affiliate of the ILGWU in Houston, Texas and was founded in 1935.


Scope and Contents

Records are comprised of financial records, lists, scrapbook clippings, newsletters, minutes, and photographs. The many photographs of the collection depict Labor Day parades, group pictures, convention delegations, celebrations, and union members. Financial records include balance sheets, bank stubs, and a disbursement ledger related to the health fund and bank stubs, check stubs, receipt book, and ledger related to the general fund. Rosters include the names of workers and piece work records. Printed material includes newsletters from Local 214 and the Houston Area Industrial Council, songs, jokes, stories, a program, and flyers related to union activities and events. Minutes record the proceedings of meetings held between 1949 and 1963.
