Abstract: The Committee on Political Education (COPE) is an arm of the AFL-CIO that collects and distributes information about political candidates' stances toward labor-related legislation and issues and makes political endorsements based upon those stances. COPE, Area 8 encompassed the states of Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Materials document the labor, legislative, political and educational activities undertaken by Area 8 and include correspondence, field reports, and printed material.

Historical Note

The Committee on Political Education (COPE) is an arm of the AFL-CIO that collects and distributes information about political candidates' stances toward labor-related legislation and issues and makes political endorsements based upon those stances. COPE, Area 8 encompassed the states of Kansas, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Walter F. Gray served as director of COPE, Area 8, from 1962 to 1965, when became director of the Far West region (Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Washington). He was succeeded in the southwest region by Sherman Miles.


Scope and Contents

Records are comprised of correspondence, field reports, and printed material. Correspondence pertains to political and educational activities undertaken by COPE in each state of Area 8, specific legislation, organizational announcements, meetings and conferences, election predictions and outcomes, specific labor unions and labor councils, and other topics. There are also some newsletters, bulletins, financial documents, flyers, and other printed material scattered throughout the correspondence. Field reports contain information about area-specific candidates, labor unions, legislation, and general updates pertaining to COPE's activities. Printed material includes COPE's 1956 Handbook and a report entitled Voter's Attitudes Toward State Issues.
