Biographical Note

Lured by the promise of inexpensive, fertile farm land, Captain Peter Gaffney came to Red River County, Texas from Richland, South Carolina and homesteaded near Clarksville in the early 1850s. He died in late 1854 leaving his wife with a cotton plantation to manage and five children: Martha A., Malvina, Florence, Estelle, and Charles. Martha Gaffney arrived in Clarksville on December 21, 1854 to take possession of her husband's lands and continue the family cotton business. Her only son, Charles Gaffney, served in Gould's Regiment, De Brays Brigade during the Civil War and apparently declined to take over the family business. After the war, he sought work elsewhere in Texas and Oklahoma. Following Martha Gaffney's death (January 5, 1870), the daughters moved to Clarksville, the plantation was rented, and a manager was hired to oversee it in Charles' absence.

Scope and Contents

The Gaffney Family Papers consist of family and business correspondence from 1846 to 1915, and financial and legal records from 1840 to 1884. Miscellaneous printed materials and personal documents, largely undated, are also included.

Peter Gaffney's papers consist of correspondence, financial, and legal documents from 1840 to 1854. The correspondence, financial, and legal records of Martha Gaffney and their children comprise the bulk of the collection from 1853 to 1893.

The family's financial records contain invoices, statements, receipts, notes, and bills of sale which indicate the extent of household, business and travel expenses. Lega1 documents include writs of summons, contracts, requests for probate, and assignments of power of attorney. Miscellaneous materials include a memorandum book that belonged to Charles, an essay written by him as a student, newspaper clippings, medicinal recipes and a trade card. Unique items are grade reports for the daughters (approximately 1859), a registration certificate for Charles as a qualified elector in Texas (1867), and contracts between Mrs. Gaffney and her freedmen and their co-laborers (1868).

Letters from Charles Gaffney to his family in 1864 describe the hardships he endured while serving in the Civil War. Undated letters describing events during this period from Sister Mary Ursula and Mamie Bryan at the Ursuline Convent in Columbia, South Carolina, relate stories of Yankee destruction there and invasions elsewhere (filed with the undated correspondence). Vivid insights into the moral and social attitude of the 19th century are provided by the letters to Charles from his friends and cousins, and in those to and from his sisters.
