Abstract: The Sabine Area Local Industrial Union 1814 was formed November 27, 1953. It had been organized a month prior as Local 85 of the Distributive, Processing, and Office Workers of America (DPOWA). Due to alleged Communist domination of the DPOWA, however, the group decided to sever ties with the DPOWA and become an individual union affiliated directly with the CIO. A long strike followed over the union's collective bargaining rights. The collection is comprised of photocopies of scrapbook pages containing clippings and printed material. Materials pertain to the formation of the local union, the DPOWA, and the strike.

Historical Note

Newly organized members of the Distributive, Processing, and Office Workers of America (DPOWA), Local 85, Port Arthur, Texas received their charter on October 22, 1953. Employers were Port Arthur retail and distributing stores. Due to alleged Communist domination of the DPOWA, the membership voted to sever connections and became an individual union affiliated directly with the CIO on November 27, 1953. A strike, which began during this time over recognition of the union as a collective bargaining agent by retail merchants in Port Arthur, was resolved in 1955. The Sabine Area Industrial Union, Local 1814, affiliated with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU), AFL-CIO on August 1, 1956, and continued to be known as the Sabine Area Industrial Union.


Scope and Contents

Collection consists of photocopies of scrapbook pages containing newspaper clippings. The clippings trace the formation of the union and describe the strike, 1953-1955. Collection also includes The Port Arthur, Texas Story by Thomas Goodfellow and Matthew O'Brien which contains a chronological history of the Distributive, Processing, and Office Workers of America Union and a leaflet by Local 1814 entitled The Strikers' Story.


Organization

Photocopies of scrapbook pages are arranged in 8 volumes in chronological order insofar as is possible. Some time periods overlap.
