Delta Kappa Gamma Society International was founded in 1929 as a sorority for female educators. Its mission is to promote the personal and professional growth of its members. The Beta Phi Chapter was founded in Arlington, Texas, in 1936. Approximately twenty schools in Arlington and Mansfield, Texas, have been named for members of the Beta Phi chapter. The records of the Beta Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International are primarily comprised of yearbooks and scrapbooks documenting chapter activities. The collection also contains the chapter’s charter, a golden anniversary publication, photographs and other organizational records. |

The records of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Phi Chapter document chapter activities from its founding in 1936 through 2005. The material is primarily comprised of scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, photographs and ephemera related to Beta Phi’s activities. There are also numerous yearbooks which typically contain a list of founders; excerpts from the Delta Kappa Gamma constitution; international, state and chapter officers; calendar of meetings; chapter membership list; and a list of former Beta Phi Chapter presidents. Other items include a cookbook compiled from various members’ recipes and sold as a fundraising project; a Golden Anniversary publication; the original Beta Phi Chapter charter; constitutions; a photograph; and printed material. Those researching women’s organizations and their activities in North Texas will find this collection of interest.

The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Phi Chapter, Records were in possession of Cynthia Fairchild, President, until they were donated to The University of Texas at Arlington Library Special Collections on September 17, 2007. Three additional scrapbooks in the possession of Bobbie Griffin were donated on December 10, 2009. The donation of both collections was negotiated by Brenda McClurkin, Historical Manuscripts Archivist and acknowledged by Ann Hodges, 2007 and 2009.

Duplicate photographs and materials of no archival value were deaccessioned. The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, Beta Phi Chapter Records were processed and finding aid prepared by Margaret Knox-Kruschke.

Items housed in folders numbered AR513-1-8 through AR513-2-2 were removed from scrapbook 7. Pages that housed photographs were photocopied to show original arrangement and photographs were placed in protective sleeves. Folder AR513-1-8 also contains items which were found loose inside the back and front pockets of scrapbook.
