A Guide

Historical Note

The Center for Greater Southwester Studies and the History of Cartography was created in 1990. Its purpose, according to its governing document, is “to encourage and sponsor interdisciplinary studies, scholarship, research, and teaching that interpret the people, society, economy, environment, history and cultures of the Greater Southwest.” The Center is governed by the Executive Committee, the Center Fellows, and the Director. The Center is a joint program between Special Collections and the History Department.

Scope and Contents

These records document the operation of the Center under the leadership of Dr. Richard Francaviglia, director of the Center from 1991 to 2008. This collection includes budget files, grant proposals, governing documents, committee minutes, publicity, handouts, syllabi, endowed chair proposal, Center conference materials, symposium, video recordings of interviews and Center events.
