Historical NoteAlexander Hieken, born in 1908, was an active union member in Texas since 1934. He was active in many CIO and AFL-CIO affiliated unions, serving as an officer in several. As a reporter, he achieved the first guild contract with a Texan newspaper and later became a telegraph and state editor. He was elected President of the TSIUC, Texas State Industrial Union Council. Al Hieken was the husband of Elizabeth Kimmel, an organizer for the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU).
