<abstract label="Abstract:">B. H. (Benjamin Holland) Epperson, lawyer, politician, and entrepreneur, was born in Amite County, Mississippi in 1826.  A former student at Princeton University, Epperson came to Texas in 1841 and studied law.    His license to practice law was issued in 1846 in Red River County.  Active in Texas politics, Epperson was an unsuccessful Whig candidate for governor in 1851, served multiple terms in the Texas State Legislature, and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1866 only to be refused his seat. In 1856, he became a charter director of the Memphis, El Paso, and Pacific Railroad Company and served as president of that company from 1866 to 1870.  In 1871, Epperson moved to Jefferson where he continued to practice law and remained active in politics and business until his health failed in 1877.  Epperson died September 6, 1878. This collection is comprised of three original legal documents: his license to practice law, 1846; and two deeds pertaining to the estate of Cairo Epperson, 1858 and 1861.</abstract><unitid label="Identification:">GA212</unitid><physdesc label="Extent:" encodinganalog="300$a">1 folder ( 0.01 linear ft.)</physdesc>
