Albert R. and Ruby Bass Letters:A Guide
Biographical NoteAlbert R. and Ruby Bass were residents of Dallas, Texas. In 1932 they adopted their daughter, Carleen (later changed to Jimmie Carolyn), as a small girl from the Berachah Home in Arlington, Texas. The Berachah Home was operated from 1903 through 1935 by the Rev. J. T. Upchurch and his wife, Maggie Mae, as an establishment for homeless, usually pregnant girls. At the Berachah Home, young women were encouraged to keep their babies and were taught skills to aid in their support after leaving the facility. An adoption was a rare occurence. Scope and ContentsAll letters in this collection pertain to the Bass' adoption of their daughter, the bulk being from Berachah Home correspondents, Maggie Mae Upchurch, Allie Mae Wiese, Ruth Brady, and Flora McAnally.
