Historical Note

The Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union (HERE) was formed in 1891 and includes employees of the hotel, food service, manufacturing, textile, airport, gaming, transportation, and various other industries throughout its continuing history. Today it is known under the name UNITE HERE after its merger with the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees in 2004. The Local 353 was originally chartered in Dallas, Texas, to represent workers at a Ford Plant, but went dormant after the plant closed. In 1969, it was revitalized to organize all the Sky Chef, Inc. units in the area. The local headquarters has moved several times: in 1978 to Arlington, in 1981 to Euless, and was later reestablished in Dallas. Local 353 has represented members in the airport, automobile manufacturing, restaurant, and hotel industries in throughout North Texas. Variant names of Local 353 records found in this collection include Hotel & Restaurant and Bartenders International Union (1967) and Hotel, Motel, Restaurant and Club Employees (1978).
