Abstract: This collection is comprised of photocopied news clippings contained in a scrapbook created by Jack Limmroth, president of the Local 6180, Communication Workers of America (CWA), headquartered in San Angelo, Texas. The bulk of the clippings were printed in the San Angelo Standard-Times and contain news of contract negotiations, strikes, meetings, conventions, and other news of CWA members working for the General Telephone Company of the Southwest.

Historical Note

The Communication Workers of America (CWA), renamed in 1947, was founded in 1938 as the National Federation of Telephone Workers. It is a democratic labor union led by bargaining committees made up of elected members and leaders. Today the CWA represents over 700,0000 voting members employed in the private and public sectors throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada. Local 6180 in San Angelo, Texas, was part of District 6, comprised of five states including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, and Missouri, and represented members working for the General Telephone Company of the Southwest.


Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of photocopied news clippings contained in a scrapbook created by Jack Limmroth, president of Local 6180, Communication Workers of America, headquartered in San Angelo, Texas. The clippings pertain to contract negotiations, strikes, meetings, conventions, and other news of CWA members working for the General Telephone Company of the Southwest. The bulk of the clippings were printed in the San Angelo Standard-Times in San Angelo, Texas. Other clippings were sent to Limmroth by members of other district locals, including: Del Rio, Brownfield, Memphis, Texarkana, Aransas Pass, and Gonzales, Texas; and from Buffalo and other Oklahoma locations. The nine pieces of correspondence all relate to news clippings sent to Limmroth.
