Scope and Contents
This document is a four page original battlefield manuscript copy of General Orders No. 262, written from the Headquarters of the Army at Tacubaya, Mexico, on August 24, 1847. The document outlines sixteen points of an armistice to end the U.S. War with Mexico. It is secretarily signed by five commissioners who negotiated its terms: Generals J.A. Quitman, Persifer F. Smith and Franklin Pierce for the United States; and Ignatio de Inova and Benito Quijano for Mexico. The document also contains secretarily signed signatures of Generals A.L. de Santa Anna and Winfield Scott ratifying the agreement. This manuscript copy of General Orders No. 262 was presented to Lieutenant Colonel Baxter of the New York Volunteers on August 24, 1847.
