Historical Note

Dr. Clarence Phillips Denman, 1897-1983, was born in McGregor, Texas. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Texas, and his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. Other institutions which Denman attended were Southwest Texas State Teachers College, Texas Christian University, the University of Pennsylvania, Memphis State University, and George Peabody College. He taught at Western Kentucky State College, Arkansas State College, and Belmont College before coming to Arlington State College (now the University of Texas at Arlington) in February 1955. Denman had fellowships at the University of Texas, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Michigan.

Denman was a professor of history at the Arlington State College (now the University of Texas at Arlington) from 1955 to 1968. He conducted research for and wrote The History of the University of Texas at Arlington, 1895-1917 , which was never published. He also wrote The Secession Movement in Alabama, which was published in 1933 by the Alabama State Department of Archives and History.

Clarence Denman married Annie Mary Sprouse, who was from Springfield, Tennessee and who taught in White Settlement, Texas. They had one daughter named Ann. Clarence Denman died in Santa Clara, California in 1983.

Scope and Contents

The Clarence Denman Papers are comprised primarily of notes and drafts Denman used in writing his book, The History of the University of Texas at Arlington, 1895-1917. Included is correspondence exchanged between Denman and others as he conducted research. Other materials consist of photographs and printed materials relating to the University of Texas at Arlington’s previous campuses; these materials were donated to Denman by former students or their relatives. The History of the University of Texas at Arlington, 1895-1917 was never published.

The collection is organized in three series. The first series, which contains manuscripts, drafts with corrections, notes, and correspondence relating to Denman’s book, reflects his research. The second series is comprised of photographs, slides, and negatives, which Denman acquired as part of his research into the history of The University of Texas at Arlington. The third series contains printed materials related to the history of UT Arlington. The materials in Series II and III were collected and given to Denman by former students of the University or by their relatives.

This collection would be very useful for anyone researching the history of the University of Texas at Arlington, especially from 1895 to 1917.

Processing Information

The Clarence Denman Papers were reprocessed and the finding aid prepared by Margaret Knox-Kruschke.

During reprocessing, the processor noted that the following items listed in the old finding aid were missing from the collection:

• Grubbs Vocational College, Arlington, Texas – Student Body, undated: Extent (25.5cm x 117cm), Panoramic

During reprocessing, the processor noted that the following items were present within the collection but were not noted on the old finding aid; these items are listed in the "Detailed Description of the Collection" of the current finding aid:

• Carlisle Military Academy – Faculty and students
• Grubbs Vocational College – Scrapbook page photographs
• North Texas Agricultural College – Main entrance
• Glass slides

Also, the processor observed that two photographs of Grubbs Vocational College faculty and staff in Series II were adhered to each other; further preservation work by a conservationist is warranted to separate these photographs from each other. News clippings were photocopied on acid-free paper, and the original clippings were discarded.
